Château Margaux 2023

Château Margaux 2023

Château Margaux 2023 is one of the standout wines of the 2023 vintage in Bordeaux and belongs to the prestigious Château Margaux, first classified in 1855. It is considered a vintage of great balance, combining the ripeness and concentration of a warm year with unusual freshness and precision. Technical Director Philippe Bascaules compared the style of this wine to the legendary 1996, albeit with a more modern and refined expression.

Its recommended start of consumption is between 2032 and 2035, although it will reach its peak between 2040 and 2065. It can evolve favorably for several decades in a suitable cellar.

Winemaking

Grapes: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

It follows the traditional method of great Bordeaux wines, combining extremely rigorous grape selection with modern technology to preserve the estate's characteristic finesse. The harvest was carried out plot by plot and was done exclusively by hand. Several selection phases were performed, first in the vineyard and then in the winery. Each plot was vinified separately to preserve its identity, with pump-overs and macerations adapted to each lot to gently extract color, aromas, and tannins. It aged for approximately 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, most of them new and made in the estate's own cooperage. During aging, periodic rackings were carried out manually to clarify the wine and encourage its evolution.

Tasting notes

View:

Deep ruby color with violet highlights, a sign of youth and focus. Great brilliance and density, with an intense yet elegant finish.

Nose:

Highly expressive and complex. Aromas of flowers and black and red fruit such as blackberry, cherry, plum, raspberry, and currant. Mineral notes of graphite and spicy hints of licorice and nutmeg. Subtle nuances of cocoa, cedar, and fine tobacco.

Mouth:

Silky and precise on entry. Medium-full-bodied, with exceptionally fine and velvety tannins. Fresh acidity that provides tension and length. With a very long and persistent finish in which the floral notes return.

As this is a very young wine with a long life ahead, decanting can significantly enhance its aromatic expression. If opened now, between 2026 and 2030, decanting 2 to 4 hours before serving is recommended. Between 2032 and 2042, 1 or 2 hours will suffice, checking its evolution every 30 minutes. After 2045, decanting for 15 to 30 minutes will be enough. The ideal glass is a large Bordeaux-style glass with a wide bowl and a slightly narrow rim, made of thin, clear crystal.

Food pairing

It stands out for its elegance, floral aroma, freshness, and silky tannins. Therefore, it harmonizes better with refined and complex dishes than with overly elaborate preparations. It pairs perfectly with grilled mature beef tenderloin, veal Rossini with foie gras, or beef Wellington. Roast suckling lamb or rack of lamb with Provençal herbs. It's also perfect with game birds such as pink duck breast, pigeon, braised partridge, or pheasant with mushrooms.

Dishes with fresh black truffle, especially when the wine has been aged in the bottle for several years.
