Description
PREPARATION
The Picon Amer à l'Orange is made from wine and the distillate of bitter orange peels, gentian root, quinine, spices and some essences of plants native to Algeria. Amer means “bitter” in French. Gaétan Picon, born in 1809, was a scholar who apprenticed at the distilleries of Aix-en-Provence, Toulon and Marseille. In 1837, after taking a trip to Algeria where he had been in the French army, he invented Picon and the first distillery to produce African bitters in an Algerian village. He then went on to open a series of distilleries in Constantine, Bône and Algiers. In 1862, it was crowned with a bronze medal in the bitter aperitif category at the World's Fair in London. In 1872, Gaétan Picon returned to France and created the first factory for Picon production in Marseille, which is still in use today.
