Izarra Vert is a fresh herbal liqueur, whose dominant note is mint and Armagnac. Its creation was inspired by a formula dating back to 1835 that Joseph Grattau discovered when he set up his business in Bayonne and to recreate the original flavor, the recipe was revised in 2019, with a higher concentration of plants and a reduced sugar content. Izarra means “star” in Basque. It is characterized by being clear and bright, it has a very aromatic and fresh vegetal nose, thanks to which it is highly appreciated worldwide. It can be enjoyed on the rocks or in cocktails.

Description

PREPARATION

To make Izarra Vert liqueur more than 17 plants are used such as nutmeg, coriander, fennel, angelica seeds and roots, celery, balsamite, also called spearmint, elderflower, coriander, black caraway, wild thyme, cardamom, green anise and genpi. During the first distillation, only the heart of the distillate is preserved. The heads and tails are returned to the still to be distilled again. The heart of this second distillation is mixed with two macerations of walnut shells and Agen prunes to create the distillate. Finally, the master distiller adds a little Armagnac. The Izarra brand was created in 1906 in Hendaye, in the Basque Country, by the botanist and pharmacist Joseph Grattau. It belongs to the Vedrenne Group since 2018.
