FROM MARQUIS TO BARON
The property of the "prince of the vines", the Marquis Nicolás-Alexandre del Ségur, and later of the Brane barons, Château Mouton Rothschild adopted its current name after being acquired by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, of the English branch of the famous dynasty, in 1853. For many years, despite the increasing quality of its wine, Mouton aroused little interest among its owners, reluctant to travel to a region then little explored. Therefore, it was a memorable day when in 1922 Baron Nathaniel's great-grandson, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, at just 20 years old, took charge of the destiny of an estate to which he would dedicate his entire life.
RENOVATION OF THE FACILITIES
After opening a state-of-the-art winery for Mouton Cadet and other branded wines under the name of Baron Philippe de Rothschild in Saint-Laurent-Médoc, near Pauillac, in 1993 Baroness Philippine turned her attention to châteaux. A new Clerc Milon emerged in 2011, while at Mouton a magnificent new tank room, combining tradition and technological progress, came into service in 2012, with a tasting room overlooking the vineyards. The buildings were designed and built by the set designer Richard Peduzzi and the Bordeaux architect Bernard Mazières.
