PREPARATION
Tia Maria is an infused liquor composed of cane liquor (Jamaican rum), roasted coffee beans, vanilla and sugar, originally from Jamaica. Cane-based liquors are a typical specialty of the island and coffee from the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica is one of the most recognized and expensive in the world. The legend of Tia Maria dates back to the mid-17th century, when a beautiful young Spanish aristocrat fled the turmoil that the colonial war brought to the island of Jamaica. Her maid kept a family treasure, a small jewelry box with black pearl earrings and an ancient manuscript with the recipe for a mysterious liquor. The recipe was named after the brave woman and lay dormant for many years before being rediscovered in the 1940s by Dr. Kenneth Leigh Evans, who began producing and marketing it. From that day forward, Tia Maria has been a favorite of coffee liqueur lovers around the world and was even used in the first Espresso Martini recipe over forty years ago.
