Our goal is for you to know some curiosities about rum so that it is easier for you to enjoy this wonderful drink.

Origin of rum

The history of rum dates back to 17th century in the Caribbean, when African slaves, employed on sugar cane plantations, discovered how to ferment and distill cane juice to obtain an alcoholic beverage. Although the production of rum began at that time, it was towards the end of the 19th century when it began to be widely disseminated as a commercial product.  The development of rum is closely linked to the process of European colonization, the slave trade between Africa and America, and the intensive cultivation of sugar in the colonies. These factors notably influenced its production and popularization, creating a tradition in which sugar cane played an essential role in the social and economic history of the Caribbean. The expansion of this liquor also reflects the economic and political dynamics of the time.

After obtaining the juice, what is achieved is a good fermentation to subsequently obtain distillation. As we have mentioned previously, there are different types of rum. This means that there are different types of distillate and fermentation to choose from.

Types of rum

There are various varieties of rum that are distinguished by their manufacturing process and the time they spend aging. light rums have a smoother flavor profile, making them perfect for use in mixed drinks. On the other hand, the more aged rums, which mature in wooden barrels for several years, develop a richer and deeper taste, being ideal to enjoy alone or in more refined drinks. There are also variants such as spiced rum, to which herbs and seasonings are added to offer a unique and aromatic flavor. A less well-known option outside the Caribbean region is agricultural rum, which differs by being made directly with fresh cane juice, instead of molasses, which gives it a different intensity of flavor.  This diversity in the types of rum is due to the different traditions and techniques used in its production, which allows it to occupy a prominent place in both simple drinks and more elaborate preparations.

Rum is important for the economy

Rum has played a crucial role not only in the cultural and social sphere, but also in the global economy. Since the 18th century, regions such as the Caribbean have stood out as major producers of this drink. Countries such as Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic have a thriving industry that not only meets local needs, but exports thousands of bottles annually.  Rum production creates countless direct and indirect jobs, covering the entire process, from manufacturing to distribution. Cuba, with its rich tradition of innovation, is known for world-renowned brands.

Rum and literature

Rum has had an important role in literary narrative. A clear example of this is "Treasure Island", a work by Robert Louis Stevenson, where Long John Silver, one of the protagonists, tells anecdotes about rum and its effects.  Over time, rum has been closely linked to the figure of the pirate, being a recurring drink in stories and films. During the era of piracy, many of these characters became famous for their passion for rum, which is associated with their daring spirit and defiant attitude.
