This is because they have aromas and tannins that are only enjoyed when consumed in the best possible conditions. For this reason, and although in Spain it may seem somewhat strange, in many northern European countries, such as Germany and Scandinavia, they consume mulled wine.

Why is mulled wine consumed?

The consumption of mulled wine is a tradition that has its origins in the Middle Ages in the Nordic European countries, in which temperatures are lower. For this reason, in these places where winters are more extreme, the consumption of this hot drink has been used for centuries to help the body warm up. the cold hits. Now, it is true that wine is an alcoholic beverage, and you probably know that, when alcohol is heated, it evaporates very easily. Therefore, it is true that you must be careful with the temperature at which you heat it and the time that the drink is exposed to the heat source, since it can lose its properties if it is not done well. Therefore, as we will see below, it is best to heat it over low heat and prevent it from reaching the boiling point. This is vital to avoid the burnt caramel flavor that can make an appearance. Likewise, you should also know that in each Nordic country they have a different mulled wine recipe. Therefore, in this article we are going to focus on showing you how to make mulled wine in the best possible way so that you can enjoy a comforting drink on the coldest days of winter. 

How to make mulled wine?

Although, as we have mentioned, each country and each region has a different mulled wine recipe, there is a “universal” way to prepare this comforting drink for the winter. To simplify, we can say that you must follow three steps. First of all, you should put half a bottle of red wine in a pot and put it on low heat. While it is heating, you can add cloves, a cinnamon stick, anise, an orange peel and a couple of tablespoons of sugar or honey to sweeten.  Next, you can slightly intensify the heat, but you should not reach medium heat. It is advisable to stir the mixture to prevent the sugar from settling at the bottom and ending up caramelizing. As it heats up, the aroma of the mulled wine becomes more present and fills the room. If you continue heating the mulled wine, while stirring, it may come to a boil, but, as we have previously mentioned, you should not let this happen, as it may acquire a burnt caramel flavor and aroma. Therefore, before it starts to boil, you can remove it from the heat, use a strainer to separate the drink from the elements you have added and serve it in one or more cups of tea. You can accompany the mulled wine with nuts, chocolate, pasta, cookies, marzipan or biscuits, whatever you prefer. 

What ingredients does the mulled wine recipe contain?

As we mentioned in the previous section, mulled wine is a type of drink whose ingredients can vary greatly from one country to another. However, as there is a universal recipe for preparing it, we can say that the ingredients it contains are simply the red wine you prefer, cloves, cinnamon sticks, anise, orange peels, honey or sugar. Without a doubt, it is not at all complicated to know how to make mulled wine.  However, since there are some ingredients that not everyone likes, such as anise or cinnamon, you can always you can make your own recipe by eliminating the ones you don't like and adding the ones you are most passionate about. For example, in some places, lemon peel is used instead of orange peel or a combination of both or other ingredients are added, such as bay leaf, nutmeg or cardamom, to make another type of spiced mulled wine which is more popular in countries like Hungary. In conclusion, we can say that mulled wine is a tradition that is deeply rooted in the Nordic countries and is used to combat the winter cold.
