What is Martini made of?

What is Martini made of?
The Martini is a classic cocktail that is considered a spirit drink. The Martini Distillery & Rossi was established in 1863 by Alessandro Martini, Teófilo Sola and Luigi Rossi. Throughout its history, the company was the subject of several acquisitions and finally, at the end of the 20th century, it came under the ownership of the rum manufacturer Bacardi. The traditional Martini recipe includes gin and dry white vermouth.

What exactly is Martini?

When one mentions a Martini, it is difficult not to associate it with James Bond and his famous phrase. However, it should be noted that the term "Martini" covers both the iconic cocktail and the products of the renowned Italian brand Martini & Rossi. In this sense, it is important to have a broad understanding of both aspects to better appreciate their cultural and historical importance. Therefore, we are going to explore in detail both the origin and recipe of the cocktail as well as the history and variety of products offered by the Martini & Rossi brand.

Martini is a legendary cocktail

The classic martini served in a conical martini glass is very popular around the world and has become an iconic symbol of the cocktail. Its origin dates back to the 19th century in the United States, although its exact inventor remains unknown, surrounded by several myths.  Ways to prepare this cocktail are often debated. Traditionally, it is made with gin and vermouth, although a less common variant is vodkatini, which uses vodka instead of gin. This last option is James Bond's favorite, who prefers it mixed and cold, although without ice.  If you visit our gin catalog you will notice that it is the drink most used to make the renowned vermouth. It is true that there are other options to choose from, but without a doubt Martini is presented as the number one brand.

What is the Martini made of?

The exact recipe for the different types of Martini is kept secret, so the manufacturer provides limited information on how it is made. Only high-quality ingredients are used, such as carefully selected wines and a variety of botanicals, which are combined through a complex process to obtain the final product. Despite this, the basic production steps do not differ much from those used in classic production, and wormwood is an essential ingredient that should not be missing. To give you a clearer vision, I will explain the common vermouth production process.  To achieve the alcohol level required by law, producers generally choose to incorporate alcohol or grape must into wines. The wort is also used to obtain the desired sweetness in the drink. Likewise, you can adjust the sugar content by adding caramelized sugar. In addition to basil, other ingredients such as herbs, fruits and spices are allowed to sit in flavorless alcohol for several weeks. Subsequently, this extract is incorporated into the wine. Martini & Rossi, for example, uses fresh white wines from Italy, including Trebbiano and Cataratto.

What is the white Martini made of?

The White Martini is made mostly with fresh white wines from Italy, such as Trebbiano and Cataratto. Then, extracts of herbs, fruits and spices are added, and they are left to rest in neutral alcohol for a few weeks to obtain that flavor and aroma that characterizes it. It is a drink with a careful production process that combines different ingredients to create a unique experience for the palate.

What is the Red Martini made of?

The red Martini is a drink made mainly from Italian red wines, such as Sangiovese. In addition, extracts of herbs, fruits and spices are incorporated, which are allowed to rest in neutral alcohol for a period of time so that they can develop their distinctive flavor and aroma. This complex mixture fuses sweet and bitter flavors, resulting in a unique drink that is highly valued in the world of cocktails.

How do you drink a Martini?

The Martini is a cocktail that is enjoyed as a drink, either alone or mixed with other ingredients. Martini & Rossi products offer various options for savoring it, either in its pure form or as part of a cocktail. For example, delicious long and refreshing drinks can be combined with tonic, using the Rosso, Bianco, Rosato or Fiero varieties.  For the famous Dry Martini, Dry Vermouth is used as a base, which is composed of 6 cl of gin and 1 cl of dry vermouth. Purists prefer London Dry Gin for this classic recipe, and serve it in a conical martini glass. This sophisticated cocktail is usually decorated with an olive, although you can also opt for a twist of lemon peel to give it a different touch.
